Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #249 Art in the Park

“The arts have an incredible potential for expanding interconnectedness, for reaching people, touch them, and increasing empathy and compassion in the world.” – Olafur Eliasson The challenge this is week to feature public art that we enjoyed seeing. My husband and I often travel to Boston, MA, visiting the museums, exploring the City’s well-known history, plus the occasional Red Sox game. To me, Boston is one of those cities where my camera is always ready because there is so much to photograph! When we were there in 2006 Boston was hosting a citywide Cow Parade. Since our challenge for this week is to feature public art in all of its…

Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #223 Flights of Fancy

“Never underestimate the power of a small group of committed people to change the world. In fact, it is the only thing that ever has.” ~ Margaret Mead This past week John (photobyjohnbo) has challenged us to “… consider sharing images of interesting or unusual subjects that represent notions or ideas that seem incredible even today or seemed unrealistic at some point in the past.”  I decided to feature the Constitution, a former warship located in Boston National Historical Park, part of Charlestown Navy Yard in Charlestown, Massachusetts. The USS Constitution, one of five frigates built for the United States Navy in 1776, gained recogination during the War of 1812 and then…

Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #186 Low Light

“Pictures taken in low light seem to convey a certain mood or feeling, perhaps more so than those taken in bright sunlight.” – Sylvia Bacon     This week Sofia is challenging us to feature some of our low light images.  Sunrise and sunset on Kiawah Island’s beach seldom fails to disappoint.  At times the sky and its reflection on the ocean becomes so overwhelming when washed with brilliant colors.  The header shot and the one below are two examples. “Get outside. Watch the sunrise. Watch the sunset. How does that make you feel? Does it make you feel big or tiny? Because there’s something good about feeling both.” – Amy…

Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #173: Interesting Architecture

“As an architect you design for the present with an awareness of the past, for a future which is essentially unknown.” – Norman Foster Interesting, beautiful architecture can be seen most anywhere people live, especially in cities and towns.  It is visual art that is hard to ignore.  I always enjoy photographing interesting looking buildings.  I selected a few favorites pictures from within the United States – Maine, Boston and Chicago. This Gothic-inspired architectural house has won the distinction as the most photographed house in Maine.  It is known as the Wedding Cake House since George W. Bourne (a prominent 19th-century shipbuilder) built it for his new bride in 1825. …

Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #170: Street Art – Boston

Street art, such as sculptures, murals, graffiti, poster art, is commonly displayed on buildings, walls, sidewalks – anywhere it can attract public attention.  This week Patti invites us to share images of street art whether it is scrawled messages all the way up to the most elaborate of commissioned work.  Even though Boston Massachusetts is full of beautiful and interesting murals and graffiti, I decided to feature four pieces of commissioned works of art and public statues.  The header shot of the Tortoise and Hare at Copley Square, was created as a tribute to all Boston marathon runners by Nancy Schon in May 1995. This first street exhibit more than…

Lens-Artists Photo Challenge: #79 WINDOW WITH A VIEW

This week Amy is inviting us to show a few pictures of a “Window with a View”.  As a few of you know, I have a camera close by even if it is only my iPhone, which by the way takes some really good pictures!  These window shots are from vastly different types of windows and, I think, they all have an interesting view!   “Your desire to be near to a window is your desire to be close to life!” ― Mehmet Murat ildan   This was taken through the window of a passenger jet while flying over the Atlantic Ocean from St. Kitts to the east coast of…

Lens-Artists Photo Challenge: #66 FILLING THE FRAME

Patti asks us to show some images which demonstrate “Filling the Frame”.  The implied ‘frame’ is simply the border of a photograph.  When choosing to “Fill the Frame” only the subject is shown with very little open spaces around the edges.  Why is this concept of interest to many photographers?  If the subject is the only focal point in the picture, then it is easy for the viewer’s eye to connect with the details and also get an idea of the kind of feeling the photographer wants to convey.   Earlier this week for a couple of days, the Kiawah Island Photography Club hosted Richard Bernabe, an internationally prominent professional…

DELICIOUS: Lens-Artists Photo Challenge

This week Patti’s photo challenge invites us to explore what “Delicious” means to them.  To me, Delicious means good food and drink, the preparation of it and enjoyment while eating. Last summer we spent a few days in Boston, MA, with good friends exploring the city and reliving many good memories from previous years.  Our adventures took us to the Food Court at Copley Place Mall and the variety and presentation of delicious food waiting to be prepared was staggering. Apologizes in advance for not having pictures of beef, pork or other meats in their showcase.  For whatever reason I could not locate my photos from the meat showcases.   Now I…

CITY SCAPES: Lens-Artists Photo Challenge

For this week’s Lens-Artists Photo Challenge, Patti invites us to “share a cityscape of one city or several cities with populations in the thousands or millions.  Near our home or thousands of miles away, most importantly, show the big picture view.” When thinking about big cities – what is it about a city that attracts some people or can cause others to try to avoid them as much as possible!  Do you enjoy visiting a city, would you like to live in one if you don’t already?  Personally, I like cities and would probably be happy living in one since I’m married to a “city guy” who loves them. To me,…

COLORFUL: Lens-Artists Photo Challenge

What is it about color that can make you happy or sad, relaxed or energized?  For the photo challenge this week Tina suggested showing happy colors and images.  Hopefully a few of the pictures selected will bring a smile to your face and brighten your day!   “Your attitude is like a box of crayons that color your world. Constantly color your picture gray, and your picture will always be bleak. Try adding some bright colors to the picture by including humor, and your picture begins to lighten up.” ∼  Allen Klein   This overjoyed alligator looks ready to grab someone walking by the local restaurant so he can treat…
