LOOKING UP: Lens-Artists Photo Challenge

When selecting photos relative to the subject “Looking Up”, I was amazed how many there were of the sky, tall buildings, trees, birds flying, etc.  Thank you Patti for choosing such an interesting phrase for the weekly photo challenge!

“Keep looking up … That’s the secret of life.” ∼ Snoopy

It is breathtaking to look up at this magnificent ship silhouetted against the beautiful blue sky and clouds.  The USS Constitution is the world’s oldest commissioned warship afloat, launched in Boston, Massachusetts by the United States Navy in 1797 to protect American merchant shipping during the Quasi-War with France and defeat the Barbary pirates.  She earned the nickname of “Old Ironsides” during the War of 1812 when fighting the British frigate HMS Guerriere.   Currently, the USS Constitution is berthed at the former Charlestown Navy Yard in Boston and open to the public.

Imagine my surprise when touring Boston, Massachusetts, and looking up to see a giant teapot hanging on the side of a building, spouting a constant cloud steam.  It is known as “The Steaming Kettle” and has been a Boston landmark since 1873, long before Starbucks even existed.  It was originally cast for the Oriental Tea Company then moved to a local coffee shop which Starbucks later purchased.  More can be learned by googling Starbucks Coffee teapot in Boston.

I enjoy collecting photographs of weathervanes.  Fortunately novelty ones are prevalent in much of Maine so it pays to look up at all the unusual ones.  This mermaid caught my eye due to her unique coloring.

“Once you have tasted the taste of sky you will forever look up” ∼  Leonardo Da Vinci

Yes, this sky is real, the photo has only been cropped.  This image was taken from our deck in Maine where we are often rewarded with beautiful colors in the sky.  Except for fog and when the sky is blanketed with rain or snow clouds, the colors are very clear and crisp since there is not any smog and few humid days.  This was taken during the summer after sunset as the brilliant red color of the sun was reflected on the bottom of these darker clouds.

“In order to see birds, it is necessary to become a part of the silence.”  ―  Robert Lynd

American White Pelicans are huge water birds and it is said they are among the heaviest flying birds in the world.  They have a wingspan of about 95–120 in (240–300 cm) and their weight averages between 11 and 20 lbs (5.0 and 9.1 kg).  These pelicans do not plunge-dive the way Brown Pelicans do instead they feed  from the water’s surface, dipping their beaks into the water to catch fish and other aquatic organisms.  This was taken in Florida.
