FENCES: Lens-Artists Photo Challenge

The photo word challenge Ann-Christine gave us this week is FENCES.  Have you ever made a conscience effort to look for fences as you go about your everyday life?  When doing so recently it was amazing how many I encountered on a daily basis but never really “saw” until now.  They have different personalities and play various roles in everyday life.  Some fences are strong and provide protection while others are old and broken down, they can be closed to offer privacy or open, friendly and inviting, appear rigid and controlling or short and decorative.  These photos of fences were taken in King, Ontario plus the southern part of Maine, Florida and South Carolina.

These large fenced in areas are home to several Belgium Draft horses when they are not working on the family farm.  The fences are protective although friendly enclosures, designed so people can enjoy seeing these stunning animals.  Interestingly, only one decided to pose for this impromptu photo shoot!

Years ago, this fenced in area could have held various farm animals.  Now, the aged wooden posts define property lines and serve as a relic from past years.

“Don’t ever take a fence down until you know why it was put up.”  ∼  Robert Frost

This is a functional fence used to create awareness for the sand dunes and their importance along the Atlantic Ocean coastline.  It is used to deter people from walking on them although the resident deer would not have any problem jumping over the fence!  Healthy sand dunes are extremely important as they provide a natural barrier between a raging storm surge and personal safely.

Four kinds of fences provide safety at the giraffe zoo site so children can interact this these impressive animals.

This fenced area is strong and protective so people can admire this magnificent lion at the zoo.

“The fence around a cemetery is foolish, for those inside can’t come out and those outside don’t want to get in.”  ∼

“A good neighbor is a fellow who smiles at you over the back fence, but doesn’t climb over it.”  ∼  Arthur Baer

As this is being written, Hurricane Florence is looming in the Atlantic Ocean only days away from slamming into the southeastern US coastline somewhere between Georgia and Virginia.  It’s a monstrous hurricane and its impact is predicted to be a devastating.  My husband and I send thoughts and prayers to our family, friends and others in its path.  Please stay safe!!
