Lens Artists Photo Challenge #328 Winter

“There’s just something beautiful about walking in snow that nobody else has walked on. It makes you believe you’re special”. – Carol Rifka Brunt

John, our host this week, mentioned in his opening sentence that winter will be upon those living in the northern hemisphere in only two weeks. Must admit I had to smile when reading his words because we have already had two snowstorms and it is only December 14!

For the challenge, John suggests we share some pictures of what winter means to us. Personally, I have enjoyed the couple of winter months we have experienced in southern Maine.

Out of the fifteen summers spent here we have only stayed until January three different times. During two of these occasions Nov, Dec and part of Jan, turned out to be a snowy months – this year and back in 2009! I enjoy the snow; watching the trees, lakes and streams around us take on a magical, soft serene look. Hopefully these pictures will give some indication of how beautiful it can look! (Must admit thought, that not long after a snowstorm its beauty quickly disappears when it turns into ice and then puddles of water everywhere, and perhaps ice again, Ugh… That part of wintery snow isn’t so pleasant.)

This first picture was taken a couple of weeks when my husband and I were out running errands and we decided to stop by Wells Harbor in Maine just as the snow began falling. The houses in the background are along Atlantic Ave and the Ocean is right on the other side.

Shortly afterwards as we drove through Kennebunk it looked pretty coming down.

“There is nothing in the world more beautiful than the forest clothed to its very hollows in snow. It is the still ecstasy of nature, wherein every spray, every blade of grass, every spire of reed, every intricacy of twig, is clad with radiance.” – William Sharp

These next three pictures were taken a few days later after our second storm of the season. This is a picture of the woods right behind our house, Brrrr, it was a cold morning, even the birds look cold!

“Snowfall rouses your inner child to dream and play once more”. – Angie Weiland-Crosby

This snow stayed around a couple of days and Tucker couldn’t stop playing in it. Here he’s pausing for a brief rest before playing again!

His play-time game was to race back and forth in the snow between my husband to myself. Notice his cocker spaniel ears flying in the wind!

The snow blizzard of 2009. One of my favorite pictures shows my husband walking our dog. Interestingly, all of our pets love getting out in the snowy weather.

“The snow is sparkling like a million little suns”. – Lama Willa Miller

This last selection of pictures was taken after this snowstorm. Everything looked so beautiful so I grabbed my camera and walked around as the morning sun was coming up.

I will end my neighborhood tour by showing another picture overlooking our deck some years ago!

Hope you have enjoyed seeing these snowy pictures through my camera lens. To see more details in a picture, be sure to double click on it. And a big thank you goes to John for suggesting such a timely challenge. Be sure to read his post and enjoy his pictures by clicking here.

Hope eveyone has a good week; stay healthy and be safe.

  1. Sylvia, you shared such gorgeous winter photos. I fell in love from the start with that beautiful featured photo of a creek and tree branches covered in snow and ice. Every single photo was so beautiful. One photo toward the end — the forest with the moon seen through the trees — is worth hanging on a wall. Impressive capture!
