Lens-Artists Photo Challenge #226 Textures

“It’s an obvious opportunity for black and white when a scene contains little color but lots of texture.” – John Beardsworth

Texture is an important part of our interaction with art and photography. It is said to be an important factor along with line, color, shape, form, value and space. In a photograph it can add visual interest, highlight unique patterns, or even evoke emotions.

Texture in Nature:  The opening header shot was taken in Maine right after a hurricane passed through. I feel like this picture is full of different textures; the sharp rocks with soft moss growing on the tops, fast moving water with air-filled foam on the surface and the force of salt water spray.  After reading the opening quote, I decided to make this picture a black and white. I think I prefer the color version, what about you?

Flowers display many different textures, in their individual blossoms and also when planted among other flowers in a garden.

One of my favorite plants is the Southern Magnolia tree (Magnolia grandiflora) and I have been fortunate enough to have a tree in my yard most of my life. These trees bear flowers all summer and their fragrants fills the air like a fine perfume. Notice the beautiful textures and details in these blossoms and the difference between the mature flower verses the spent one.

Man made texturesMultiple textures can be seen most everywhere among buildings both old and new.

Or, rusty, peeling handlebars on the bicycle stored on the bow of a shrimp boat. And, heavy, course ropes and chains securing it to the pier.

“Texture is the most enduring and ubiquitous underpinning of form… Certainly a calming, meditative and appealing world for both the eye and the mind.” – Lynda Lehman, Painter and Photographer with a passion for coulour and the form of nature.

Hope you enjoyed seeing this varity of textures and hopefully these pictures will encourage you to look at things more closely and notice how interesting and  different texture are.

Thanks goes to Jude for suggesting such a great topic for the week!

“Today, give a stranger one of your smiles. It might be the only sunshine they see all day.” – Catherine Pulsifer
