“Dance with the waves, move with the sea, let the rhythm of the water set you soul free.” – Christy Ann Martine
This week Anne suggests we think about Water. She says, “Water enhances our photos, adding impact. Photographing it is also fun and sometimes a challenge.” I agree, photographing water makes the picture more interesting, especially if wildlife is around.
The first several pictures show some of the wildlife we have on Kiawah Island. These pelicans are resting after having spent their morning diving for food. In a few more hours they will be out again, fishing, before darkness arrives.
Kiawah is the home of a pod of dolphins who live here year round. This particular pod is well known for their strand feeding technique which only a few pods of dolphins in the world practice. If interested in learning more about this unusual feeding behavior, I wrote a post about them some time ago which can be seen by clicking here.
Black Skimmers (Rynchops niger) have an interesting way of feeding, they drag their lower beak on the water surface, to scope up small minnows.
The picture below shows how pelicans fed. They are able to see fish just below the water surface when flying above and then dive head-long into the ocean to get it. This was taken in St. Kitts.
Bath Time, it seems all birds enjoy taking a bath! This duck and these Spoonbills (below) spend several minutes splashing around and diving under to water to get all the feathers wet! Looks like they are dancing on the water.
Hope you enjoyed seeing these pictures, each one can also be enlarged by double clicking it. Thanks goes to Anne at Slow Shutter Speed for giving us such an interesting challenge. Be sure to see her post here.
