Lens-Artists Photo Challenge: #107 WINTER

This week Ann-Christine suggests we post the last topic in this series featuring the four seasons; Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.

“I prefer winter and fall, when you feel the bone structure of the landscape—the loneliness of it, the dead feeling of winter. Something waits beneath it, the whole story doesn’t show.” – Andrew Wyeth

When winter is mentioned, many people think about snow and cold temperatures although in the southern states close to the Atlantic Ocean it is normally fairly warm and sunny.  Usually we spend our winters on Kiawah Island and the temperatures here generally range from the 40’s  to 60’s.  Snow is such a rarity that when it occurs everything literally comes to a standstill – no mail delivery, many road are impassable until the snow melts, few trips to the grocery store, schools closed for days and even Charleston International Airport closes down for about four or five days.  Snow plowing equipment here is unheard of since the southeastern part of SC only gets a measurable accumulation of about once every ten years.  But, in January 2018, the unthinkable occurred and a historical snow storm dumped about 5” of snow in the Charleston/Kiawah Island area.   About the same time this was happening at home, my husband and I were in the midst of a big snow storm in Maine – we received about 14“!   Just by coincidence, this particular winter was one of the few when we stayed in Maine later than normal.

Note:  You are able to double click each image to view in full screen.  And, should you be interested in seeing a few more pictures from this particular storm in Maine, check out my previous post entitled Cold.

“Kindness is like snow—it beautifies everything it covers.” – Kahlil Gibran

For this picture below,  forget that I mentioned snow storms rarely occur beside the Atlantic Ocean in southern states. This picture was taken in Virginia Beach, Virginia, through our second-story window eight years before.  Since they do not see much snow there either, everyone there also had to shut down.

“To appreciate the beauty of a snowflake it is necessary to stand out in the cold.” – Aristotle

For this picture, I braved the wind, freezing temperatures and blowing snow to take this on our back deck in Maine.  Notice the size of the beautiful snowflakes.

“The first fall of snow is not only an event; it is a magical event. You go to bed in one kind of a world and wake up in another quite different.” – J.B. Priestley

What a difference a day makes.  This is also a view from our deck looking in a different direction.

“A snowflake is one of God’s most fragile creations, but look what they can do when they stick together!” – Unknown

“When it snows, you have two choices:  shovel or make snow angels.” – unknown

Not long after the snow stopped, my husband decided to shovel off our driveway, Ha!  Once he got tired, he decided to take our cocker spaniels for a little walk, (header picture).  Since they were born in New Hampshire, they think snow is normal.😊

“Despite all I have seen and experienced, I still get the same simple thrill out of glimpsing a tiny patch of snow.” – Edmund Hillary

Hope everyone is coping well as the coronavirus pandemic continues to change lives around the world.
