“The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.” – Jacques Cousteau
This week Amy encouraged us to show favorite pictures of various Seascapes, such as the water front, shoreline and waves. Early one morning when walking on the beach at Kiawah Island, SC with our dogs, I was excited to see this female Loggerhead turtle returning to the Ocean after laying her eggs in the sand dunes. Fortunately, I was able to take a series of pictures documenting her long, laboring journey back to the ocean.
This first one, originally posted on Mar 15, 2019 in my blog “Around The Neighbor”, was taken when I first saw the turtle headed back to the ocean. The second shows her collapsing from exhaustion at the edge of the water, so grateful knowing she had finally reached safety. During the entire trip, she was only able to travel a short distance before stopping to rest. The third was taken as she finally crawled far enough in the ocean to be caught up by the waves and swim away. Overall, she was on the beach for several hours and from the time I took the first picture until she swam away was well over an hour! I wonder when she will return again, maybe later in the season or in a few years….

Having spent much of my life close to the Atlantic Ocean I have been fortunate to witnessed many of the different moods and changes in the ocean waters. Sometime it is mellow and peaceful as shown in the first picture, although often times it is more energetic as large waves roll up on the beach. Surfers are delighted when it is like this; and, then there are those of us to enjoy sitting and being absorbed by the rhythm and sound of the waves crashing along the shore line. The last picture gives you an idea of how threatening and powerful the ocean can get during bad weather. To me, no matter what mood the ocean is in, it is always so picturesque! This set of pictures was taken on the coast of Maine.
