Lens-Artists Photo Challenge: #109 The Sun – A Road Trip North

“Keep your face to the sun and you will never see the shadows.” – Helen Keller

This week Amy challenges us to feature pictures of the Sun.  Saturday, when she announced our word challenge, my husband and I were traveling north up the east coast from South Carolina to Maine.  Not knowing what images to share, I decided on photographing the sun various times during the last leg of our three day journey to Maine.  These images were taken on Sunday during a seven hour period with the iPhone 11 Pro Max, from inside the car at 70+ miles an hour.  (If you’d like, double click each image to view in full screen.)

Since we would arrive at our house in Maine the next day, we decided to get back on the road early.  Just in time to see this huge red ball slowly appear on the horizon as we were leaving Delaware around 6:00 am.

Many miles down the road, the sun turned parts of the sky into orange tones.  This was taken on the New Jersey Turnpike near Newark International Airport..

Around 10:00 the sun lost its beautiful color as it climbed higher in the sky.  We were briefly heading east and it was tucked among a few clouds when we approached the George Washington Bridge in New Jersey.  This is a famous double-decked suspension bridge which crosses the Hudson River and connects Fort Lee, NJ to the New York City borough of Manhattan.  (It’s history is documented here.)

Once across the bridge in New York State, I turned in my seat and was able to catch sunlight reflecting off these two steel towers.

By 11:30 or so we reached Connecticut and noticed the sun hiding behind these few rain clouds.  Fortunately the shower was brief!

At last!  We reached our destination in Maine.  As I got out of the car I couldn’t help but notice the beautiful blue sky and bright sun shining down on us.  So happy to be at our destination!😊
