Spring time at the Rookery! Each spring there is a flurry of activity at Magnolia Plantation’s Rookery. The area is alive as Great Blue Herons, white Great Egrets and other large coastal birds begin the breeding season. After selecting an site for their nest, the nest building begins. The adults work as a team throughout the season, building their nest together and providing food. The male gathers sticks and other nesting materials and gives it to the female to arrange it their nest. These photos were taken at The Rookery at the Audubon Swamp at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens in Charleston, SC. Sofia wants us to show pictures of what…
Lens-Artists Photo Challenge: #187 Water
“Dance with the waves, move with the sea, let the rhythm of the water set you soul free.” – Christy Ann Martine This week Anne suggests we think about Water. She says, “Water enhances our photos, adding impact. Photographing it is also fun and sometimes a challenge.” I agree, photographing water makes the picture more interesting, especially if wildlife is around. The first several pictures show some of the wildlife we have on Kiawah Island. These pelicans are resting after having spent their morning diving for food. In a few more hours they will be out again, fishing, before darkness arrives. Kiawah is the home of a pod of dolphins…
Lens-Artists Photo Challenge: #144 Taking Flight
“No bird soars too high if he soars with his own wings.” William Blake The phrase, Taking Flight, made me think of birds although it can easily describe other things flying like butterflies, bees and balloons. Looking through my photo archives, I found pictures showing several species of birds Taking Flight that I’d like to share. (Double clicking each image shows a larger version). These two pictures are of the Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus) as he gracefully glides through the air, so quietly he can hardly be heard in spite of his size. These owls are the largest common owl in the eastern United States with a wing…
Lens-Artists Photo Challenge: #139 Special Moments
“It’s the special moments that keep you going and smiling, make you the person you are and give you a lifetime of memories.” – unknown With so many special moments over the years it was hard to limit it to a few pictures. The birth of my children and marriage to my husband is at the top of the list. ‘Aha moments’ also count as special moments; they capture my full attention, causing me to pause and savor the moment! A few of these memorable moments are shown below. Could not resist showing this special moment as one son sorted through his easter basket and the other one waited patiently for…
Lens-Artists Photo Challenge: #119 A HIDEAWAY
Being outside with nature has always provided special hideaways; a wonderful place to relax and surround myself with beauty and tranquility. “Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy while cares will drop off the autumn leaves.” John Muir, Our National Parks This week Ann-Christine wants us to think about our hideaways, where we like to retreat for relaxation and solitude. So many wonderful places such as early morning walk on the beach while watching Sandpipers feed, sitting by the river’s edge observing canoes idly drifting in the breeze, observing gorgeous sunsets or…
Lens-Artists Photo Challenge: #116 SYMMETRY
Symmetry in nature and architecture is all around us in one of its many forms – horizontal, vertical or radial. “Symmetry is what we see at a glance.” – Blaise Pascal This week Patti wants us to explore a few types of symmetry. Simply put, symmetry can be described this way; if the subject is divided in half, both sides will look similar or the same. See Patti’s post to learn more and enjoy her beautiful examples, click here. The first image (the header) is an example of radial symmetry. The raindrops are making beautiful concentric circles as they hit the deck floor. Think of how many times have we…
Lens-Artists Photo Challenge: #110 Creativity During Covid
This week Tina asked us to share a few things we did over the past few months when the covit pandemic created a worldwide social recession. “Creativity is the gift that keeps on giving” – Eric Maisel Catching up on long overdue projects around the house, spending more time learning from webinars and working to improve my photography skills became more of a priority. My husband and I spent mornings on the beach. Exploring with my camera was both mentally and physically rewarding as he walked around enjoying the scenery. It was during this period a few photography friends spotted a reddish egret – white morph hanging out with some…
Lens-Artists Photo Challenge: #70 MONOCHROME
This week we are exploring Monochrome photography. Patti suggests we can include images in black and white, sepia, and/or different shades of one color. And, for an extra challenge, add a bit of color to a black and white image. Monochromatic pictures showcase a color scheme based on only one, single color tint. It uses only variations or shades of a single hue, which is made by altering the saturation and brightness of the base color. Black and white colors are always added. (Colorpedia by Paletton). I decided to feature with a few photographs in black and white with a single hue of color added and was surprised as to…
WILD: Lens-Artists Photo Challenge
Tina asked us to think about the word Wild this week and show examples of something Wild. Wild animals, birds, flowers, weather, Wild behavior….this list could go on and on. Since I enjoy being outside it seems that where ever I go untamed, Wild birds seem to be everywhere, happily chirping, calling to each other or sounding an alarm if another bird has invaded their space. Sometimes if I’m lucky, many different species can be found congregating in a favorite area as they socialize between meals or share a feeding area. It’s interesting to watch the behavior among the different species although if you get too close they immediately take…
HELLO APRIL: Lens-Artists Photo Challenge
This week Amy challenges us to say “Hello April!” with a few of our photographs. The advent of April is magical with renewed beauty and life all around. The sun begins to get warmer although April breezes add to slight chill in the air. New life appears on plants and trees while many birds and animals begin caring for their young. “April hath put a spirit of youth in everything. (Sonnet XCVIII)” ― William Shakespeare “A gush of bird-song, a patter of dew, A cloud, and a rainbow’s warning, Suddenly sunshine and perfect blue – An April day in the morning.” – Harriet Prescott Spofford…
